Axie Infinity is a "play-to-earn" pet training game and virtual world built on Ethereum.
Inspired by Pokémon, Axie Infinity is a play-to-earn game created by Sky Mavis. The trading and battling game allows players to collect, breed, raise, battle, and trade creatures known as "axies". All in-game assets are represented via fungible ERC-20 or non-fungible ERC-721 tokens and thus trade on secondary markets.
Skymavis began development of Axie Infinity in November of 2017, with official gameplay launching the following year. In October of 2021, the game amassed 1.8 million daily users, with daily sales volume reaching as high as $33 million. Since the game was launched in March 2018, total sales volume has reached $3 billion.
- The Axie Infinity Shard, or AXS token, is an ERC-20 utility token that serves primarily as the governance token for the Axie Infinity protocol. AXS tokens are also used for payments in the Axie in-game marketplace, where additional NFTs may be purchased, as well as a work token to be used to breed new Axies NFTs.
- Axie Infinity uses a dual-token structure. Smooth Love Potion ($SLP) is the other in-game fungible ERC-20 token. SLP is burned to enable Axies to breed and create new Axies.
